Archaeology in Ardnamurchan
Archaeological evidence in Ardnamurchan dates back over 4,000 years
and is well documented especially in the Royal Commission on the Ancient
and Historical Monuments of Scotland. "Argyll: Volume 3"
published in 1980. The publication highlights some 26 sites west of
Salen, about 13 of which are located within the boundaries of the
Ardnamurchan Estate. A summary of these areas follows. (All Grid references
refer to Ordnance Survey 1:50,000 series - Sheet 47: Tobermory)

Chambered Cairns, Cairns and Barrows
Examples of these dating back to the Neolithic Period can be found
at Camas nan Geall (Cladh Chiarnan) - set in a beautiful
and peaceful bay. Parts of the chamber and facade still remain. GR5600619.
Port na Luinge, Kilchoan "...disturbed in the centre
but otherwise well preserved" GR487631
Iron Age Duns
Allt Sordail On the summit of a rocky knoll 1.1km SSE
of Swordale Farmhouse. A considerable quantity of core material remains.

Standing Stones
Stones dating back to the bronze age can be found at:
Branault: Cladh Chatain - 2 basalt standing stones.

Camas nan Geall: Burial Ground - including a standing
stone of Bronze Age which has been carved at a later date. GR560618

Iron Age Forts and Castles
There are a number of these within the boundaries of the estate including:
Rubha Aird an Iasgaich near Mingary. :Quarrying and
stone robbing have virtually destroyed the Fort". GR492628
Camas nan Geall The remains of a stone walled Fort.

Mingary Castle built around 1400. For more details
please refer to the History page. As the Castle is dangerous it is

Farms and Townships
The remains of a number of cleared and deserted townships still exist
on the estate including those at Glendrain GR481687
Bourblaige 'The remains of the township 'cleared' in
